If she doesn’t believe me this time, I am just going to give up, I think as I swim to the surface of the water. I felt my tail smack concrete as I swam up and leaned against the side of the pool. I had to make sure she could see the ivy green, scaly thing my legs turned into when I was submerged in water, which wasn’t very often considering I could not swim until about 2 weeks ago when I was pushed into a pool at a birthday party fully clothed. Luckily, only Kristen had been there and ever sense she pulled me out of the water, tail fully formed over my legs, I had been trying to persuade her that she is not crazy, that it wasn’t just an adrenaline rush that made her see thing that weren’t real.
Now I had lifted my tail out of the water, in full seeing range for Kristen, but she looked the other direction and said,” I can’t believe you learned to swim this fast, Ivy,”
That was it. That was the last straw. Before I could think it through I started yelling,” Just look at me Kristen, I am tired of you avoiding me sense that night and I really need you to help me figure this stuff out. Wouldn’t you want me to help you if you were in the same situation?”
She turned to look at me now, to really look at me. She nodded and stood. She walked over to the side of the pool where I was leaning.
“I’m sorry, Ivy this is just really hard to take in, you know. I mean, you being a mermaid and never knew it until I pushed you in to my pool. I’m really sorry I did that, Ivy, I was trying to see if you could swim if you absolutely needed to."
“You think I am mad out you? You showed me that I can’t be afraid of something forever. You showed what my purpose is in this crazy world, showed me that I can’t be afraid to try new things because something great can happen. There is no way I could ever be mad at you for pushing me into the pool that night, Kristen, no way.” I say as I hoist myself up out of the pool and sit next to the towel.
“How long will it take,” Kristen asks,” for your legs to come back?”
“Well it took about five minutes last time. So honestly, I don’t know.” I reply worriedly as I rub the rough towel over my green tail.
